For the people of the seven Hardt communities, this natural treasure is right on their doorstep. In order to preserve the Hardt forests with their special habitats, the Regional Council of Freiburg has designated the Schwetzinger Hardt as a "Regional Forest Reserve and Recreational Forest".
In the recreational forest (1695 ha), the aim is to harmonise recreational use with the special concerns of nature conservation and forestry. The preservation, maintenance and development of sparse pine forests and open sand grass communities are the priority in the protected forests (1288 ha). In the protected forest (143 ha), nature has absolute priority, so that it may not be entered.
